Books open the door to new places and experiences! The Works Education Team would like to share its passion and advocacy for reading with you through our Book of the Month suggestions. Each month, a new book for kids and adults is featured with a brief overview. After reading the book, tell us what you thought by posting a book review on The Works Facebook page.
Kid Book of the Month:
"Chicken Soup with Rice"
By: Maurice Sendak
Maurice Bernard Sendak (June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012) was an American writer and illustrator of children's literature. He was best known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. For more than forty years, the books Maurice Sendak has written and illustrated have nurtured children and adults alike and have challenged established ideas about what children's literature is and should be. The New York Times has recognized that Sendak's work "has brought a new dimension to the American children's book and has helped to change how people visualize childhood." Parenting recently described Sendak as "indisputably, the most revolutionary force in children's books." Upon hearing that Mr. Sendak passed away on May 8, 2012 and my first thought was my own favorite book Sendak book, “Chicken Soup with Rice.” This sweet book filled with charming illustrations and rhymes celebrates the months and seasons of the year with chicken soup with rice!
Adult Book of the Month:
"The Imagineering Workout"
By: The Disneyland Imagineers
The Imagineering Workout: Exercises to Shape your Creative Muscles, is a fun book written by Disney Imagineers (the amazing team of people that develop all the magic of Disney Parks), packed full of tools to strength your work project or creative teams, plan new ways to brainstorm, or help you develop your own ideas. The Imagineering Workout is for anyone who wants to learn new ways to problem-solve all types of challenges. I personally found the insight to how introverts and extroverts respond to classic brainstorm sessions very helpful for my current role; and this book is a permanent part of my professional “toolbox.”
Jody Revenson, Disney Editions Editor says “If we go to a gym to shape and tone our bodies with physical exercises, then why aren’t we doing creative exercised to shape and tone our imaginations?”
